When the summer season is round the corner, what we all look forward to is the air conditioner. But we have never or, say, were least concerned about low power consumption till the time comes to pay the electricity bill, which leaves a hole in our pocket and at the same time much of the energy is consumed uselessly.

Air conditioners are one of the highest consumers of electricity. However, you can still reduce the budget you spend on air conditioner by following some simple air conditioner low power consumption tips. One easiest way to reduce your power consumption is to simply turn off all the electronic appliances when not in use. This can save you up to 10% power consumption.

Following are some of the tips which will help you in reducing power consumption of your air conditioner and will also save your wallet

  1. First thing first, make sure that the air conditioner is not exposed to direct sunlight. As it has been observed that a shaded air conditioner consumes 5 % less electricity as compared to those exposed to sunlight.

  2. While switching on the thermostat, set it at 78°F for each degree lower would mean 8% increase in the energy consumption.

  3. Switching your thermostat to a colder setting the moment you turn on the air conditioner will only increase your power consumption. For cooling, 24°C is the best temperature.

  4. Clean the air conditioner and change the filter regularly. Also, let your air con unit be checked every 6 months and check the Freon level as well.

  5. Turn off the AC when the weather is mild. If possible make use of fans instead of air conditioners.

  6. Shade the windows with blinds and don’t let excess sunlight and heat enter your home. And also, do not let direct heat to enter your home.

  7. Run your AC when you feel it is extremely necessary. If it is a central unit system then make sure that the ducts are insulated properly.

  8. Seal the doors and windows properly so that the cooling effect doesn’t flow outside. Preferably use tinted glass windows.

  9. Avoid using dehumidifier, while the air conditioner is on. And do not place any electronic device near the air conditioner thermostat, as it may heat up the AC and may cause the air conditioner to run longer than required.

  10. Preferably opt for an auto temperature cut off air conditioner.

Most importantly, do not put any appliances on the stand by mode as it consumes excess electricity. Install thermometers to examine the temperature of your home and depending on it maintain the temperature of your air conditioner. Turn off the air conditioner 15 minutes before leaving your home. These were some of the tips which would help in lowering power consumptions.

Thank you from Morocco.
Could be nice if you stated names of one of the most less AC energy consumers out there.
Sharp is famous by low energy consumption, they even use solar power but don't know if they have ACs

Someone told me its better to NOT switch-off the central air-conditioning for my 2 bedroom apartment (900 sq ft) if I am leaving for a couple of hours. The reasoning given was that, on starting after 2 hours it would consume much more power than it would require to maintain a constant temperature for 2 hours. The average temp outside is between 80-84F and the apartment is maintained at 73F.

Does that make sense ?

Its just 4months old
